What is Freemasonry

Freemasonry means different things to each of those who join. For some, it’s about making new friends and acquaintances. For others it’s about being able to help deserving causes – making a contribution to family and society. But for most, it is an enjoyable hobby.

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry.

Freemasonry instils in its members a moral and ethical approach to life: its values are based on integrity, kindness, honesty and fairness. Members are urged to regard the interests of the family as paramount but, importantly, Freemasonry also teaches concern for people, care for the less fortunate and help for those in need.

Freemasonry is one of the World’s oldest secular, charitable, fraternal organisations with over six million masons worldwide. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. The fundamental principles of Freemasonry are Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

Every candidate for Freemasonry must affirm a belief in a single Supreme Being. This belief is a matter for the individual and Freemasonry recognises each person’s own beliefs. Religion and politics are never discussed within the Lodge.

Why join

Freemasonry is about sharing a common desire for charitable support and following a high moral code. It is a male society, focused on following three core principles and improving oneself and others. Our society We welcome men of any race, religion, political belief and status.

How to join

One of the most common misconceptions about Freemasonry – and there are many of them – is that you have to be invited to join. There is absolutely no reason why you should not ask to join – in fact that is the correct procedure. Please contact our secretary.
